The State of Alabama has been in the news lately due to some events that have been unfolding in the case involving a great deal of legislators and the owner of Victoryland gambling raceway. This greyhound racing venue has been very popular in the state of Alabama is one of the few places that you can participate in gambling and live racing. Now they have been suspected of bribing legislators in trying to get past the gambling Bill and now they’re having to face the consequences. Their online website states that the last race that was posted live occurred on Saturday, May 14. Some races where staged in order to involve participants from around the country to finish up their season. As of June 1 all their live events actually have been suspended.
Unfortunately for the company, this has not been the final blow dealt to the greyhound racing and gambling facility as it is met with new challenges due to the fact that it was holding electronic bingo there. According to the website it will be impossible to hold my racing due to economic reasons even though they have been able to provide this type of gambling and racing since 1984. Now the courts are looking at them in judgment as they tried to determine the legality of electronic bingo which is being held at the venue. Right now the bingo facility claims that they have been allowed to legally gamble their since 2003. However, former Gov. Bob Riley stepped in last year and claimed that the electronic gambling games were illegal.
The stopping of the live greyhound racing and the possibility of stopping all electronic gaming activity has severely hurt the local area. Initially when the venue opened it had over 2000 employees and paid over $200 million in taxes. Now they greyhound racing is being shut down from their live events, they will lose over 200 employees with more pending on the trial for the bingo gambling. on June 6, 2011 the trial began in which they’re calling to the mat the owner of the gimlet facility, state senators, lobbyists and other people that were accused of being involved in bribery in order to pass gambling legislation. So far there have been 10 people accused of this crime.
The case is now beginningand they are getting ready to go underway since the 10 key people were arrested last October. Since former Gov. Bob Riley had a hand to play in the allowing of the legal electronic gambling in the state, ten accused are working to subpoena the governor in hopes of overturning the ruling. Now witnesses are being added to the list to testify in this case. With two governors and a variety of other legislators, this has already become a high-profile case. Now to add to that of the other names such as Randy Allen from the country band Alabama and Secretary of State Beth Chapman will be participants as witnesses. The defense will also have many high-profile backers such as Senators and even a circuit court judge.
